Privacy Policy

Last updated: January 21, 2026

Hootly ("the App") is a reading and focus application designed to help users build reading habits by tracking sessions, progress, and streaks. Your privacy is important, and this policy explains what data is (and is not) collected, how it is used, and your rights as a user.

1. Data We Collect

1.1 Personal Data

Hootly does not collect personal information such as:

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Account credentials

The app does not require user accounts or logins.

1.2 Usage Data (Analytics)

Hootly uses PostHog for basic product analytics to understand how the app is used and to improve functionality and stability.

The analytics data collected may include:

  • App interactions (e.g. screens viewed, buttons tapped)
  • Session duration
  • App version and iOS version
  • General device information (non-identifying)

This data:

  • Is not linked to your identity
  • Is not used for advertising
  • Is not shared with third parties for marketing purposes

PostHog is configured for product analytics only, not cross-app or cross-service tracking as defined by Apple.

1.3 User Content & Reading Data

All reading progress, streaks, and session data are:

  • Stored locally on your device
  • Not uploaded to any server
  • Not accessible by the developer

If you delete the app, this data is removed from your device.

2. Tracking & Advertising

Hootly:

  • Does not use advertising
  • Does not track users across apps or websites
  • Does not use Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework

Analytics are strictly limited to improving app performance and usability.

3. Data Sharing

Hootly does not sell, rent, or share your data.

The only third-party service used is PostHog, which processes anonymized analytics data on behalf of Hootly under a data processing agreement.

4. In-App Purchases & Payments

Hootly currently:

  • Has no in-app purchases
  • Does not collect payment information

5. Data Retention

  • Analytics data is retained only as long as necessary for product improvement
  • No personally identifiable data is stored or retained

6. Children's Privacy

Hootly does not knowingly collect any personal data from children under the age of 13. Since no accounts or personal information are collected, the app is inherently privacy-preserving.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights under applicable privacy laws (such as GDPR), including:

  • The right to access information about data processing
  • The right to request deletion of analytics data where applicable

Since no personal data is collected, most of these rights are effectively satisfied by design.

8. Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Any changes will be reflected in the App Store listing and within the app where required.
